Prototipia Luminosa: LOMI_lighting project
April 7 - May 31 2025
_
During Milan Design Week we presented our first investigations into creating lighting from reclaimed, upcycled and repurposed materials with the exhibition Prototipia Luminosa
Lighting is an element of fundamental importance in any space, and its design is necessarily entirely unique to each scheme. Recognising the need for a bespoke service in lighting planning, we have been working with private clients, sourcing both vintage and new fixtures, and modifying them where necessary to best fit the design scheme
A natural progression from adapting fixtures led us to experiment with creating new lighting solutions using components salvaged from disassembled, broken, and discarded lamps. We integrated off-cuts of marble and wood, papier-mâché and Japanese rice paper, fabric and wire, and equipped them with modern fittings and cables. We began collaborating with local artisans, such as the marble merchant, the carpenter, and the metalworker, to create bases for the lamps, embracing the idea of zero-kilometre design
Our first LOMI_lighting presentation features the fruit of our research in this sphere, including a series of lamps constructed using 1950/60s hand-painted ceramic lighting components from Capodimonte in southern Italy. Destined for landfill, we were able to save a large collection of these pieces, many still packed in their original shipment boxes. The style of the ceramic elements is colourful and vibrant, with a liberal touch of kitsch. Our objective has been to give new life to these components, adapting their use to make lamps that can be used in contemporary ambiances, bringing a touch of joie de vivre, while also retaining a sense of modernity
Weaving together details of the provenance of each component is an integral part of our vision. We want each lamp to speak of the context in which it was created, the materials from which it was made, and the hands that it was constructed by
The aesthetic of the various pieces is intentionally eclectic. The common thread is the search for form and elegance within the use of materials that can be salvaged or reclaimed, combined with components made by artisans in our network and local area, and curated by LOMI_
The lamps included in the MDW exhibition are protoypes of models available for commission, and are either one- off pieces or part of a small series. Each lamp is entirely customisable, both in construction and with regards cord length/colour etc.
If you would like to discuss placing a commission please contact us via DM or email
The exhibition will remain open by appointment until May 31, please contact us if you would like to visit

7 - 9 GIUGNO 2024

As part of our June 2024 show we presented the new project DJF (our friend Daf along with collaborators Jon and Francesco)
DJF offer the opportunity to participate in the construction, in their Milano workshop, of pieces of furniture following the principals and designs of the ‘autoprogettazione’ series by Enzo Mari and a similar concept proposed by Gerrit Rietveld
Participants choose the item/s to produce with the support, guidance and expertise (in English or Italian) of DJF, and then take the finished piece/s home at the end of the course
Their first workshops are due to take place in 2025, please contact us if you would like to register your interest: LOMIstore.co@gmail.com

During our June event DJF constructed a Rietveld crate chair with help from our guests

To launch our weekend of events, on Friday 7 June we invite you to join us for a merenda / aperitivo, during which we will propose an interactive activity based on Living, a game created by Enzo Mari and Paolo Gallerani in 1976
Players of any age (participation is optional) select cards at random from a deck created by LOMI_ based on the principles of the original game. These cards provide the characteristics of an imaginary character players are encouraged to reflect on and in some way document
We will provide pencils and paper and welcome you to contribute to a communal drawing, with sketches or words, something relating to your assigned character
Free participation for kids and adults, no booking required
During the event we will collect donations for Aya Dawoud, a young Gazan woman, and her family @ayaa.daw3

_workshop for kids and/or adults 15.00 - 17.00
_talk on Enzo Mari with Heidi Mancino + aperitivo 19.00 - 21.00
On Saturday 8 June we will propose an activity for kids and/or adults to explore the concept of construction
Taking inspiration from Enzo Mari’s Autoprogettazione project, for which he developed a range of furniture that can easily be assembled by people without woodworking skills, we will use commonly available materials (paper, card, tape, wood off-cuts) to make miniature furniture or animal forms, to explore playing in 3D and to engage with the basic principles of construction

Saturday 8 June_ h19 - 21
Theme: Construct
_talk on Enzo Mari with Heidi Mancino + aperitivo
On Saturday 8 June from 19.00 - 21.00 we will hold an aperitivo with some of the makers and artists who are part of the LOMI_ network
Heidi Mancino will host a talk on process, craft, Enzo Mari

Sunday 9 June_ h11 - 18

_creative activity for kids and/or adults 15.00 - 17.00
On Sunday 9 June we will explore play through Enzo Mari’s designs. We will have examples of his puzzles to engage with, as well as the opportunity to play The Fable Game, a graphic story game that is reconstructed anew with every rendition
We will also provide empty cards, pencils and colouring pens to facilitate the creation of new story boards, with the intention of making a new and collective version of The Fable Game
